Standardized testing is an intimidating topic for most, but if you do it right, standardized testing can help you get into the college you want, and might even get you a scholarship. Once you reach high school, there are two main standardized tests: the SAT and the ACT. High schools in Colorado have shifted to the SAT in recent years, so that’s the test this article is going to be focusing on. For more information on the ACT, check out this link.
The SAT is a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test with an optional essay portion. There are two sections to the SAT: Math and Evidence-based reading and writing. The two sections are scored on a scale of 200-800, for two sections, this makes the highest score you can get a 1600. The SAT without the essay is 3 hours long, with the essay it’s 3 hours and 50 minutes. With the SAT comes the PSAT, the practice SAT. The PSAT is scored differently than the SAT. The PSAT has 4 sections: two Math Sections, Critical Reading, and Writing Skills. The PSAT takes 2 hours and 10 minutes to complete. The math sections and the language arts sections are graded together, making two graded sections with a score range of 120-760. For two graded sections, this makes the highest score possible a 1520.
The PSAT is also known as the NMSQT, which stands for the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The National Merit Scholarship is a scholarship awarded to students who score exceptionally high on the PSAT and who are well-accomplished in their high school careers. For more information on the specifics of the National Merit Scholarship itself, go to this link. To be considered as a candidate for the National Merit Scholarship, you would likely need to score at least a 1420.
When it comes to helping with admission, most colleges have a range of SAT scores that admitted students score, and scoring within this range or higher can aid in you getting accepted to this college. This may be taken into consideration when the admissions board is giving out scholarships. This means that your SAT score may not only help you get in, but if it’s high enough, it might help you earn a scholarship.
